Rehabilitation Act
In 1998 the U.S. Congress has ordered that the Rehabilitation Act by providing for the obligation of federal agencies make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities.
Section 508 in particular was designed to eliminate barriers in information technology in order to make available new opportunities for people with disabilities and encourage the development of technologies that can help achieve these goals.
This law applies to all federal agencies when they develop, procure, maintain or use electronic and computer technologies. In Section 508 is also planned that the agencies to provide disabled employees and members, a public access to information that is comparable to those available to anyone else.
One of the requirements for the web is to make the graphics of the web pages accessible through text labels and descriptors that could be interpreted by assistive technologies such as screen readers and Braille displays dynamic. The sixteen
requirements found in Section 508 on the web are accompanied by recommendations on how to implement these requirements, but these standards have not been updated since December 2000.
